Although this is a novel, the voices from time past make Yellowstone and its beauty come alive in a new way. Diane Smith's uses correspondence from Yellowstone Park to narrate the story.
Scientist Smith's first novel uses a diversity of characters still common to Montana. The main character A.E.Bartram, a female medical botanist, is hired to document fauna for a field study in Yellowstone. A.E. "Alexandria" does not disclose her gender until she has been hired and is on site ready for work. Daunting hardships like snow storms, rugged terrain, tender-footed men and spoiled food only make Alex more determined to succeed. Smith's story allows the reader to feel environmental detail with papable accuracy.
