I can see E. Annie Proulx with a sardonic grin writing novels that would stand an English teacher's hair on end. This author is a Pulitzer Prize Winner. Goes to show that one does not have to write in complete sentences to be an acclaimed author. Proulx has clear messages and writes fascinating script.
Proulx's Quoyle, a bumbling newspaper reporter, is the main character in The Shipping News. First, Quoyle finds himself coupling with the love of his dreams. We do not see her as dream material. She - the love- leaves him with two children - the darlings of his life. However, we do not see them as darlings.
Combine that everyday plot with the daily doings of a local rag called the "Gammy Bird." You find yourself in the middle of a funny, witty tale confabulated from the boring daily details of Newfoundland's shipping news. At the beginning of each chapter, Proulx introduces the reader to a new knot that ties each chapter title to the next episode of Quoyle's life on the coast of Newfoundland. |
